Kabini - Day 1

The kids had a day off of school due to Bangalore elections and the following day at school was a half day due to a musical program, so I decided to take advantage of a 4-day weekend and go have some elephant fun!

Sue was visiting from the US and wanted to see some wild elephants so we asked her to come along. Then my friend Judy with her kids Sarah and Katie were looking for an outing so they came too! We all managed to fit in ONE Toyota Innova for the 5 hour drive to Kabini, India.

When we checked in we were escorted to a lounge where we were given fresh cane juice and a talk by the on-staff naturalists re: our activity options for our stay.
We decided to take the 3:45p boat safari that afternoon. They said this is a good time to see animals because it is very hot and it has been many months since the rains so the animals are more likely to come to the river to drink and cool off. Also the foliage is not very dense due to the lack of water - which makes viewing easier.

First we had to navigate the pluthra of dead frogs everywhere. First we were told that the hot weather was the culprit but we later found out that the frogs were recently emerging from the lake and recent rains had them heading to higher ground aka the lobby of the hotel, so hotel workers were stomping on the frogs to limit their numbers.

Dead frogs were everywhere near the lake/river.

The "log" on the other side of the island is a crockodile.

The guide told us we had to be very quiet so as not to frighten the animals away.

August stayed quiet as long as he could. He did well considering he was in a car for 6 hours then on a boat for 3.

Every cottage had either a jacuzzi or a private swimming pool. We opted for the jacuzzi rooms because the resort's infinity pool was so lovely.

Beautiful sunset at the infinity pool. I wish I could have stayed longer but August punched Katie so I had to take him home.
